Jamie Halmick I like to think of our model like a magazine subscription, rather than the sort of subscription usually associated with apps.

Someone much smarter than me — sorry, can’t remember exactly who — recently pointed out that what app developers call a subscription is really a rental. Things stop working when you stop paying.

The objective with our model was that it was more like a magazine subscription, in the sense that when you stop paying, you keep what you already paid for.

As I stated in the article, my biggest problem with app rental is simply the reaction that I myself feel when confronted with it. There are apps that I would be happy to rent, because they are so important to my workflow, but they are precious few. I don’t think I have ever subscribed to an app that I had a passing interest in, but I have certainly paid upfront for apps that intrigued me, but which I didn’t end up using much.
